The 2021 Olympics in Tokyo will feature several new sports. One that is likely to draw plenty of attention is men's and women's skateboarding, It is the Summer Games equivalent of snowboarding, with athletes performing daring tricks on challenging surfaces and in mid-air.
There are an estimated 85 million skateboarders in the world, according to skateboarderhq.com, with a growing number of women grabbing a board. To learn more about this popular sport, Paste BN spoke with professional skateboarder Tom Shaar. While he will not compete at the Olympics, Schaar is among the top skateboarders in the world and the first to land a "1080", a trick that requires completing three rotations in the air.
Schaar favors the skateboarding discipline called park. The park course resembles a bowl and includes many in-air tricks. A second type of skateboarding is called street. The street course includes a series of stairs, rails, ramps and slopes that competitors must navigate.
