The summer months have been marked by spells of extreme heat in many parts of the world. In the United States, heat alerts and warnings have been declared in cities from the Pacific Northwest to New England and in between.
A weather phenomenon that is becoming more common is a heat dome. When low atmospheric pressure traps hot air over a region, a dome of hot air is formed. It can stall and cause days of high heat. Heat domes have accompanied some of this summer's heat waves.
