What is colorectal cancer?
Colorectal cancer is a cancer that starts in the colon or rectum, according to the American Cancer Society. It can also be called colon cancer or rectal cancer depending on where it starts.
According to the American Cancer Society, most colorectal cancers start as a growth on the inner lining of the colon or rectum, which are called polyps. If cancer forms in a polyp, it can grow into the wall of the colon or rectum before spreading to other parts of the body.
Colon cancer is the third most common cancer in the U.S. and typically affects people age 50 and older, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
