Whoopi Goldberg is clearing the air about her controversial remark about Mariah Carey.

The drama began when Goldberg made an off-hand comment about Carey's body in a clip from "The View" posted to Twitter Thursday. As Carey's music video "Heartbreaker" played in the background, host Sunny Hostin marveled at the almost two-decade-old performance.

“That was 20 years ago," Hostin said. "Can you believe that?”

"Twenty bodies ago," Goldberg said.

The remark landed Goldberg in hot water with Carey's fans, who took to Twitter to defend the pop icon.

"20 bodies ago????" one user wrote. "DO YOU HAVE A MIRROR AT HOME OR DO WE HAVE TO SEND ONE TO YOU ???"

"20 bodies ago?" another wrote. "@WhoopiGoldberg you, yourself have changed body types MANY times. What’s this about? You’re always jumping on people to be more positive and polite and you come up in here with this? What’s got you mad today?"

Despite the drama, Goldberg told People she did not intend to insult Carey, whom she considers a friend.

“This was just wistful thinking,” she said in the story published Monday. “I was not throwing shade or being snarky — just looking back on 20 years. She is a friend of mine. I just saw her Saturday night at the Barbra Streisand concert and we are good. We have no issue.”
