Selena Gomez asks fans to be kind: 'I do not stand for women tearing women down'
Selena Gomez is not here for her fans going after Hailey Bieber in response to her new song "Lose You to Love Me."
Shortly after releasing the new single, Gomez went on Instagram Live to say that her song isn't meant to attack anyone and asked her fans to be kind to one another.
"I am grateful for the response that the song is getting. I'm so grateful," the 27-year-old artist said. "However, I do not stand for women tearing women down and I will never, ever be by that."
After releasing "Lose You to Love Me" on Tuesday, fans assumed the song was about her ex-boyfriend, Justin Bieber, and their breakup.
People thought Gomez's lines in that song, "In two months, you replaced us / Like it was easy / Made me think I deserved it," referenced Bieber's quick rebound with now-wife Hailey Baldwin, whom he proposed to in 2018 just months after reconnecting and again breaking things off with Gomez.
"Please be kind to everyone," Gomez continued in the video. "It doesn't matter what the situation is; if you're my fans, don't be rude to anybody, please. Don't go off and say things that you just feel in the moment."
She continued: "Just please, for me, know that that's not my heart and my heart is only to release things that I feel that are me and I'm proud of," Selena finished. "That's all that I'll say."
After the song's release, Baldwin shared a screenshot of Summer Walker's song, "I'll Kill You," on her Instagram Stories, which fans thought was a response to Gomez's song. Bieber didn't help the situation when he shared a photo of a cheetah stained with blood to his Instagram page.
According to Buzzfeed and US Weekly, Baldwin responded to criticism from fans and denied that her post had anything to do with Gomez's song.
"Please stop with this nonsense," Baldwin wrote. "There is no 'response'. This is complete BS."
Gomez and Bieber have a long history. After making their red carpet couple debut as teenagers at the 2011 Vanity Fair Oscars after-party, Bieber, now 25, and Gomez were wrapped up in a public on-again, off-again relationship for the next several years. Gomez's upcoming album, the title of which has not been released yet, will be her first since she and Bieber called it quits for good.
