Ariel Winter gives gory details of slicing off thumb tip, accidentally throwing it out

Ariel Winter has a major quarantine tip: Be careful cutting tomatoes with sharp knives. Like, really careful.
The "Modern Family" star sliced off the top of her thumb in a domestic cooking accident and revealed all the bloody details to Access Hollywood on Tuesday – including accidentally throwing the digit in the trash.
She's laughing about it now, showing off her heavily bandaged thumb.
Winter said she was preparing Greek food at home with boyfriend Luke Benward, utilizing some newly purchased kitchen knives, and had successfully made it through four perfectly chopped onions.
Then the drama started as the conversationally distracted Winter went to work on a tomato.
"I sliced the top of my thumb off on a peeled tomato," Winter said. "We were talking, and I sliced right through and we were both like, Oh my God!' I was so shocked."
The blood spurted out as she said she hit an artery. "I bled so much," she said.

Benward wisely grabbed the unattached portion and they headed straight to the hospital. Winter did not pay attention when a nurse handed her the digit back in an unassuming plastic bag. More drama.
"She actually just gave it to me in a plastic bag and didn't tell me it was the tip of my thumb, too. So I accidentally threw it away," said Winter. " And we had to go get it. It's funny now."
Winter took the whole situation in stride during the coronavirus pandemic. The bleeding stopped and she underwent a tetanus shot. It was painful, but ultimately minor.
"I'm fine," she said. "I sliced the top of my thumb off and it's sad. I will have a mildly sad looking thumb and it's OK."
