Singer Matthew Sweet cancels tour with Hanson after suffering 'debilitating' stroke
Singer-songwriter Matthew Sweet is recovering after suffering from a stroke while on tour with the pop band Hanson.
The Nebraska native canceled his "extensive cross-country tour" where he was headlining shows and opening for "longtime friends" Hanson, after the "debilitating" stroke earlier this month, Sweet's manager, Russell Carter, told Paste BN Tuesday.
A GoFundMe has been set up to fund his recovery. Nearly $128,000 has been raised as of Wednesday morning.
"He is now on a long, difficult road to recovery," Carter continued. "Matthew has always been intensely focused and tenacious in all of his endeavors - not only in his recording career, but in all of his artistic and intellectual pursuits. I am confident that his signature determination will serve him well as he focuses now on recovery to good health. "
Earlier this month, the "Girlfriend" singer opened up to the Des Moines Register, part of the Paste BN Network, about his first tour in nearly five years.
"I started touring in the spring, and I just went through some health stuff, and got some time off during the pandemic," Sweet, 60, said at the time. "Really, sort of last year, I felt like I was ready to start playing. But by then, stuff was so booked up for the end of '23 that we decided we'll try to go in spring of 2024."

The "100% Fun" singer added: "It was really kind of a surprise. We just didn't know what it would be like being away for that long." He then noted his fall shows were "going to be pretty intense."
On the singer's official Instagram page, his team announced he would be canceling his tour, with Sweet and his band looking to get back on the road next year.
