'Joker,' 'The Irishman,' 'Knives Out' receive Producers Guild film nominations

Hours after leading the British Academy film awards with 11 nominations, the psychological thriller "Joker" scored a key awards-season nod from the Producers Guild of America.

Categories for the 31st annual Producers Guild Awards were announced Tuesday, and the villainous origin story was in the field for the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures – the guild's best picture honor – along with Golden Globe winners "1917" and "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," "Ford v Ferrari," "The Irishman," "Jojo Rabbit," "Knives Out," "Little Women," "Marriage Story" and "Parasite."

The PGA Awards are known as a bellwether for the Academy Awards, predicting 21 of 30 Oscar best picture winners – including last year's "Green Book."

Golden Globe winner "Missing Link" is up for the PGA's top animated-film award and will compete against "Abominable," "Frozen 2,"  "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World" and "Toy Story 4."

Winners will be announced at the PGA awards ceremony held Jan. 18 at the Hollywood Palladium.
