Playlist: Trixie Mattel's sugar-sweet favorite songs
Drag superstar and winner of season three of "RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars," Trixie Mattel is celebrating the release of her song "Yellow Cloud," a folk charmer that imagines an idyllic small-town life with her love: "I can see the picket fences / I can see you mow the lawn / Got no fear and no pretenses / We got nothin' but our sunglasses on."
Mattel shares a perfectly cheeky playlist of other favorites with Paste BN. It runs the gamut from folk classics to bubblegum pop.
"Happy Together" - The Turtles
First of all, a band that names itself the turtles – you know it’s a bunch of freaks. This entire 1967 album is cool but obviously, this song is the supreme.
"Venus" - Shocking Blue
This song will never not remind me of Christine Taylor as Marcia Brady. This is my ultimate "full day in drag getting in my Uber" fantasy.
"Get The Girl" - The Bangles
This song is from the "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" soundtrack. I had a cassette when I was a kid and before I knew who the Bangles were, I knew this song was The T.
"Mickey" - Toni Basil
What type of ooky-spooky cheerleader witchcraft created a song so incredible? As soon as this song starts you can almost feel the pom-poms in your hands. So gay.
"Buddy Holly" - Weezer
I learned about Weezer from a hipster girl I lived with in college. She used to say that she wanted to have the baby of Rivers Cuomo.
"Cruel to Be Kind" - Nick Lowe
Long before "10 Things I Hate About You," the human race had to experience sugary heartbreak through song. The gratuitous three-part harmony would make my arm hair stand on end (if I had any).
"Charmer" - Aimee Mann
This is like the best of the best Aimee Mann. Her lyrics are so original and so perfectly placed.
"All The Right Moves" - The Blah Blah Blahs
When I met ("Yellow Cloud" producer) Killingsworth in his studio to have him work on "Yellow Cloud," I mentioned my new '60s sound and he perked up. He introduced me to The Blah Blah Blahs and I’ve never looked back.
"Vacation" - The Go Gos
This song is like if the flight attendant asked you if you want one or two lumps of sugar but she puts in 20. The teeth in my ears now have cavities.
"Red Dragon Tattoo" - Fountains of Wayne
I became even more obsessed with Fountains Of Wayne when I listened to their iTunes live album and they sound exactly the same, if not better, live. I met Adam Schlesinger this year and had a heart attack.
