Taylor Swift thanks Toronto for Grammy noms, plays 'This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things'
In Taylor Swift's first Canadian Eras Tour show on Thursday, she thanked the crowd for helping to get her nominated for a total of six Grammys.
"I try to challenge myself to play things you might want to hear," she said to the Rogers Centre packed to the brim with fans. "I wanted to start off with one that — it just made me think of playing one from this album — because you guys did something so amazing."
Strumming the guitar and leaving the arena in suspense, Swift built up a thank you explaining how she wrote her 11th era during the Eras Tour and kept it a secret as she redid the set list and added "The Tortured Poets Department."
"It's really emotional for me," she said. "And you guys have just been so wonderful about digging into this album and really understanding where I was coming from, and you kept that album at No. 1 for nearly four months."
The singer in the coy fish dress of orange, white and blue combined "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys" with "This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things" from "Reputation."
"Cause forgiveness is the nice thing to do," she sang and added her signature laugh heard on the sixth album after the bridge. As she cackled and threw her hands up in the air, the venue giggled in unison. "This is why we can't have nice things, darlin'," she jumped in after the comedic pause.
Making her way to the piano, she sat down, and the Rogers Centre stadium chanted "Taylor, Taylor, Taylor... ." She pulled her inner ears out and said, "This is why everyone loves Canadians. This is a perfect example."
Turning back to the keys, she fused "False God" from "Lover" with "'Tis the Damn Season" from "Evermore." The latter track was cut from year two of the Eras Tour to make room for the "Tortured Poets" set.
Swift has seven songs from her 11 studio albums she's never performed:
- "Fearless": "That's When" and "Bye Bye Baby"
- "Red": "Girl At Home," "Ronan" and "Forever Winter"
- "Lover": "Soon You'll Get Better"
- "The Tortured Poets Department": "Cassandra"
Her most played tracks during the acoustic section include "You're On Your Own, Kid" (10x), "Maroon" (9x), "Death by a Thousand Cuts" (6x), "Out of the Woods" (6x) and "Clean" (6x).
At the top of Thursday night's production, Swift confirmed the nine Canadian concerts will be the end of the tour. She has five more performances in Toronto before heading to Vancouver and wrapping on Dec. 8.
