'Emily in Paris' actor says he was devastated after being 'fired' from show: 'A tragedy'
Rupert Everett is saying au revoir to "Emily in Paris," but not by choice.
The actor, who played designer Giorgio Barbieri in one episode of the Netflix show's fourth season, told Vanity Fair he was devastated to learn he will not be returning for Season 5.
"I was fired," Everett, 66, claimed. "I did a scene in the latest season, and they told me, 'Next year we'll speak.' I waited for them to call me – but ultimately, it never came, and they just fired me."
Paste BN has reached out to representatives for Netflix for comment.
Everett indicated his departure from the show was due to script changes, and Vanity Fair cited a source who said his character's story reached its conclusion. "Show business is always very difficult, from the beginning to the end," he told the outlet. "When they write the screenplay, they think they want you – but then things change, and they lose your character. I don't know why."
Still, Everett said he was upset about not being brought back. "For me, it was a tragedy. I was in bed for two weeks because I couldn't get over it," he said.
Lily Collins stars in "Emily in Paris" as Emily Cooper, an American who moves to France for work. Everett made his debut on the show in its latest episode, released in September 2024. The Season 4 finale, "All Roads Lead to Rome," introduced Giorgio as an old friend of Emily's boss Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu).
Netflix previously unveiled the cast for "Emily in Paris" Season 5 in April. But Camille Razat, who plays Camille, was noticeably missing, and the actress later revealed she "made the decision to step away" from the show.
"This character has meant a lot to me, and I feel that her storyline has naturally come to an end," Razat said. "It felt like the right moment to explore new horizons."
According to Netflix's Tudum, Season 5 of "Emily in Paris" started production in Italy in July. The new season is expected to premiere later this year.
