Alex Ovechkin is engaged to Russian tennis star Maria Kirilenko

Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin announced Monday that he and Russian tennis player Maria Kirilenko are engaged.

Ovechkin, 27, who has been dating Kirilenko for over a year, announced the news on Twitter.

With the NHL in the midst of a lockout, the former MVP has been playing in Moscow. He was a constant presence at the matches of his now-fiancee this summer, cheering her on at the French Open, Wimbledon and Olympics. If her play is any indication, she appreciated the support.

Kirilenko, 25, reached a career high of No. 12 in the WTA rankings and advanced to the semifinals at the Olympic tournament at Wimbledon. Her year-end ranking of No. 14 was the best of her career.
