Just how big is Skelly, the giant Home Depot skeleton? We put his size to scale
If you take a quick walk around your neighborhood this time of year, chances are you will see massive ghouls in your neighbors' front yards.
Giant skeletons, scarecrows and spooky decor of intimidating sizes are a growing trend. Take Home Depot’s Giant animated Jack Skellington: The 13-foot-tall skeleton also comes at a whopping price of $399.
Lance Allen, senior merchant of Decorative Holiday at The Home Depot, says the retail store is at the forefront of supersized decorations. “Since releasing Skelly in 2020 and inventing the 12-foot giant category, we have continued to innovate and expand our selection," Allen said via email.
Allen said the store has added at least one new giant every year since 2020. This year, Home Depot has nine offerings 7 feet or taller in its Giants Collection.
Lowe's is also getting in on the oversized trend.
"Halloween is about going big," Jen Wilson, Lowe's senior vice president and chief marketing officer, said via email. Lowe’s has a wide selection ranging from 12-foot animatronic scarecrows and 10-foot reapers to an in-ground Kraken, which sold out in five hours in July, Wilson said.
Just how big are the spooky Halloween offerings?
Here's a look at a some select spooky decor:
Eek − that's a huge skeleton on my neighbor's yard!
Though candy remains the most popular Halloween purchase − an expected $3.5 billion in sales this year − American consumers might spend even more on decorations. According to the National Retail Federation, decoration sales could reach $3.8 billion this year.
“Spending on Halloween has grown significantly since before the pandemic,” wrote Katherine Cullen, the National Retail Federation's vice president of industry and consumer insights. Consumers will spend 20% more this year on average than they did in 2019, Cullen said.
With Home Depot's Skelly selling out ever year since it was released, it's easy to imagine why retailers are excited about selling giant decor in the future. "We looking forward to creating more exciting pieces for Halloween enthusiasts," Allen said, "and I’m happy to share we aren’t slowing down anytime soon."
