Trump's 2025 address to Congress set records for time, duration

President Donald Trump's set new records of time and duration in his address to a joint session of Congress Tuesday night, a speech punctuated by Republican applause, Democratic opposition, and the removal of a Texas congressman who shouted at him.

Trump spoke for nearly 100 minutes, and his address, with an estimated 9,831 words, was the longest in recent history.

Trump spoke at length about border protection, tariffs, immigration, and budget cuts by the newly created Department of Government Efficiency as Republicans cheered him on.

Democrats responded with shouts from the floor, displays of protest signs, and silence. Some walked out. One congressman, Rep. Al Green of Texas, was escorted from the chamber after interrupting Trump and refusing to take his seat.

How many minutes did Trump speak?

State of the Union addresses have varied in length but have trended longer since the 1960s.

Trump spoke for one hour, 39 minutes, and 32 seconds, a record, according to The American Presidency Project.

Measured by time, Clinton's address in 2000 is the second-longest, at 1 hour, 28 minutes, and 49 seconds.

Trump now has the record with 9,831 spoken words. Biden's 2023 address set a second-longest record with 9,216 words, according to the Project. That surpassed Bill Clinton's 1995 address with 9,190 words.

How long was the address itself?

By the clock, lengths of delivering speeches do not necessarily correlate to the number of words in an address. The pace of delivery and breaks for applause can lengthen a speech.
