Flashback Friday: Time after time, time travel romance is fun
After watching The Time Traveler's Wife last weekend I decided to make a list of the best Flashback Friday time travel romances to feed the addiction.
The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
What would the list be without the book that sparked the movie? First, I have to say I loved this book (and movie) because at its core it's the story of the romance between two people. They have ups, downs, fights and make-ups. Audrey just throws the small (hah!) aspect of time travel into the mix. Brief summery… Henry is a librarian born with a condition called Chrono-Displacement Disorder … basically, he time travels back and forth without control. He meets Clare (his love) when she is 6, then over the course of a lifetime they fall in love and grow. The story was so interesting because readers get to see both characters' points of view and the ages are always different. When they meet, though, Clare is 6, he's in his 30s, and at the end, she is old while he is younger. For contemporary fans looking for a bit of paranormal spice (and, of course, tears), I'd pick this up.
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
This was my first Highlander novel and not my last (I've lost count after 20 or so). Diana is such a good author, and the romance is steamy. Clair is a former combat nurse who is thrown through time on her second honeymoon … she finds herself in Scotland right in the midst of a war. Even though this is a monster of a book (it's huge, people), it's great. It's the first in the Outlander series, and I feel as though Diana's books get even more refined and better as the series goes on. WARNING: Readers who do not like a tiny bit of S&M (yea, that's tiny for me) and a rape scene at the end, not to mention slight (depends on how you look at it) adultery will not like this book. So for those of you looking for something less potentially upsetting, check below.
The series:
Outlander
Dragonfly in Amber
Voyager
Drums of Autumn
The Fiery Cross
Breath of Snow and Ashes
An Echo in the Bone
Written in My Own Heart's Blood
Beyond the Highland Mist by Karen Marie Moning
I had to put a KMM book in here because she is one fantastically steamy author. I have all her Highlander books (I did mention 20ish, right?), and the first still holds a place in my heart. A vengeful Fae (yum) has tossed Adrienne into medieval Scotland and directly into the path of Hawk. There's a bit of a yes-no-yes thing going on, but when they get together … well, KMM writes the best bedroom scenes. The scene where Adrienne meets her "future husband" for the first time is great, and honestly who doesn't like Adam Black? I'd recommend this entire series for romance lovers and Highlander chasers alike.
The series:
Beyond the Highland Mist
To Tame a Highland Warrior
The Highlander's Touch
Kiss of the Highlander
The Dark Highlander
The Immortal Highlander
Spell of the Highlander (another favorite!)
Into the Dreaming
