Christy Pastore: Actors make the worst boyfriends
Christy Pastore, author of Unscripted, which stars a hot actor as the hero, shares some reasons why being the girlfriend of an actor might not be the most fun.
Christy: In my latest book, Unscripted, the hero, dreamy Ronan Connolly, is an actor who finds dating in Hollywood to be a bit troublesome and has given up altogether. Yet the fantasy persists. Many women want to date an actor. Most ladies will admit they have a Top Five list of celebrities they'd like to date or sleep with. My husband knows that if Bradley Cooper comes a-knocking on our door, all bets are off, and in turn I shall grant him the same favor where Charlize Theron is concerned. But fantasy aside, in real life, actors make the worst boyfriends.
• Actors have odd and busy schedules. Callbacks, auditions and shooting don't just happen from 9-5. These things happen on nights, weekends and oftentimes far away from home, leaving you, the girlfriend, alone for hours, days, weeks and months on end. Silver lining: Your celebrity boyfriend could be famous enough to pull strings that would allow you to travel with him. Hello, Malibu beach house or five-bedroom home in Vancouver for three months during filming.
• Dating an actor means you have to look your best all the time. As I write this, I'm wearing lounge pants, a zip-up hoodie, slipper socks, no make-up and my hair is in a messy bun. Never under any circumstances should one go outside to the mailbox, grocery store or local coffee shop looking like this — ever! You can, but just realize that you will be photographed, because as the chosen girlfriend to the sexiest man alive, you're not allowed to have a bad hair day. Get ready for the Internet and Twitter to explode with pictures of you looking just as amazing as you did every Sunday morning after a night out with your sorority sisters at a drunken barn dance.
• Paparazzi, invasion of privacy and rumors, oh my! Again, dating a high-profile actor means you are continuously hounded by the paparazzi. Even taking your dog for a walk will be front page news. Not just you, but say your actor boyfriend runs into an old friend on the streets of New York City. Your actor boyfriend then hugs this friend innocently — hello, paparazzi and endless rumors. This old friend suddenly becomes an ex-girlfriend, and your life spirals out of control — emotions run high, there are misunderstandings, then distrust sets in and day after day endless rumors suggest your actor boyfriend is reuniting with said ex-girlfriend (thank you, Internet). Then your break-up becomes front page news. So now you're back at the grocery store wearing sweats, buying a pint of ice cream, looking at tabloid pictures of your ex-boyfriend kissing his new girlfriend.
• And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate. The real downer of dating an actor are the haters — and not for your celebrity boyfriend but for — you. Yep, that's right, you've infringed on millions of fan girls all of whom are now seething with jealousy, because you've dashed their hopes of becoming the girlfriend of Mr. Sexy Actor. It was their dream to land your boyfriend. They wanted to be the girl next door that stole his heart — not you. You've suddenly become a man-stealing tramp. And thanks to the Internet, these trolls will be able to express their personal dislike for you in various public forums. Not that you'll give a crap because you're blissfully happy with Mr. Hottie, and who needs the Internet when you're dating a celebrity? Silver lining: You'll quite possibly have many fan girls that will defend your honor.
But, even with all of the irritating hassles and haters, some actors just play the game, doing what they have to do to make it in the business. In Unscripted, Ronan Connolly has become weary of it all, but somehow not yet jaded. He's the exception that proves the rule. A chance meeting with Holliday Prescott, a woman who is no stranger to the sinister side of Hollywood, makes him rethink his self-imposed isolation — ultimately a wise choice that will reward him in ways he could never have envisioned.
