State of Romance: Love climbs every mountain in Vermont

On this day in 1791, Vermont was admitted to the U.S. as the 14th state. The land was claimed by the French during their colonial expansion in the 17th century, leading to the state's French name, which means Green Mountains. The French ceded the land to the British after the Seven Years' War. The settlers later declared an independent Vermont on Jan. 15, 1777, during the American Revolution. Vermont joins Hawaii, Texas and California as the four states that were sovereign states before joining the United States.
