Love and Lust rec: 'Secrets of Nothing' by Liz Borino
Secrets of Nothing by Liz Borino
About the book, according to Liz Borino:
After several months overseas, Rhett and Kaden O'Neil fantasize about a return to their version of normalcy. However, the FBI mission shows no signs of completion and the men are forced to wait.
Just when Rhett reaches the end of his patience, a single phone call shatters his world. His beloved grandfather's plane disappeared. No tracking. No landing. No crash site.
Nothing.
Rhett now must unravel the lies in place to protect him so he can help his family. And not even the risk to his own life will stop him.
Why you should read it: In the second book of the Secrets series, No Time for Secrets, Rhett's sister Annabelle was found alive but kept in an unspeakable situation. Rhett rescues her and tries to set her life to rights, but Annabelle would try a saint's patience, and one lie too many endangers everyone's life. It also costs Rhett's husband, Kaden, his leg. Book three, Secrets of Nothing, picks up the story with Rhett continuing his grandfather's mission with the FBI to rescue kidnapped women. Rhett and Kaden are in Amsterdam and things are not going well.
Kaden suffers from terrible nightmares about the plane crash that injured him badly enough that he had to have part of his leg amputated. Rhett is learning not to overprotect Kaden, but it's hard for both men to find their way, when Rhett gets more bad news: His grandfather is missing. The search for Pop leads to yet another mystery in which Rhett and Kaden find once again they don't know who to trust. Annabelle once again proves that she is a damaged young woman who makes terrible decisions. Kaden isn't the only one suffering from PTSD after the crash. Annabelle's little boy, who is as destructive as a child with ADHD can possibly be, can't even go near an airport, let alone board a plane.
We're introduced to a new character, Daisy, a German shepherd service dog who has been trained to assist Kaden. Daisy can even open the refrigerator and fetch a bottle of water. She's also alert to any variation in Kaden's temperament. Daisy comes with her own trainer whose job now is to train Kaden and Rhett how to use Daisy as a service dog, not just as a beloved pet.
There are many twists and turns as the story progresses. This is a mystery, spy novel and romantic love story. Kaden and Rhett are still very much in love and still having hot sex to prove it to each other. The secrets in this series are like a hydra: When one puzzle is solved, more secrets are revealed to take its place. In the middle of all the chaos happening to the couple in Europe, Kaden gets yet another terrible phone call, this time about his mother.
The ending of this book is the beginning of yet another unexpected adventure. The Secrets series is not finished, not by a long shot. This is one of my favorite series. I love Liz Borino's style of writing. The characters of the series, especially Kaden and Rhett, stick with me long after the end of each book. The secondary characters are so much more than secondary to the stories. Pop, Annabelle, Donnie, Martha, Ariel, Stuart, other company employees, and even Lassie the cat and Daisy the dog are critical to the books. As Secrets of Nothing ends, you know the secrets and dangers are not yet over for anyone. I can hardly wait for the next book!
Becky Condit is a widow, mother of three and grandmother of 10 who reads all kinds of books, but her go-to comfort books are erotic romances. A romance novel coupled with just-out-of-the-oven chocolate-chip cookies and a glass of cold milk is her idea of heaven. She reads and reviews more than 250 books a year, so you won't often find her without her Kindle in hand, but when you do, she'll probably be gardening, doing needle crafts, working in her upholstery workshop and spending time with her family.
