Sweet Romance Report: 5 in Melinda Curtis' TBR pile

Summer is the time for book boyfriends. But how to pick just one? In the Sweet Romance Report, you can always find clean, wholesome romances. Sweet romances have no explicit sex, but still create that heart-fluttering feeling of falling in love. Here's my to-be-read sweet romance pile this month — a handful of contemporary stories that will tug your heartstrings, a western historical, and a paranormal romance. Firefly Nights by Cynthia Thomason. Hoping for a fresh start, Kitty Galloway packs up her son and a few bare necessities and hits the road. Only now they're stranded in the Blue Ridge Mountains and at the mercy of small-town justice. But it's the temporary gig she gets caring for an injured pilot that makes her start believing in second chances. After completing his tour of duty, Campbell Oakes came home a hero to his North Carolina town. Until a freak accident forces the decorated soldier to accept the help of the down-on-her-luck single mother. Quirky and far too appealing, Kitty—along with her sassy kid—is making Campbell trust in the future again. Except it turns out that Kitty isn't the woman he thought she was…

Winner Takes All by Cheryl Harper. Stephanie Yates isn't really sure she's ready to leave her hometown and see the world, but there's not much she can do about it now: her friends have sent her on her way! And her first stop is a village in the breathtaking mountains of Peru, where Daniel Lincoln, her lifelong crush, is setting up medical clinics. Stephanie thought she could hide her feelings for the hotshot doctor no problem, but Daniel has changed. And spending time with this strong, caring man helps her imagine a new life for herself, and for Daniel. That is, if he can start seeing her as more than just a friend…

Lacy (Pendleton Petticoats book five) by Shanna Hatfield. Eager to make her own way in the world, Lacy Williams leaves behind her family on the Umatilla Reservation and accepts a job in Pendleton at the telephone office as an operator. The work she takes in stride, but dealing with the unfamiliar, unsettling feelings stirred by the handsome banker across the street is an entirely different matter. Grant Hill wants a wife. However, not just any wife will do. If that were the case, he'd make an announcement at the mercantile and cause a stampede to the church. Grant wants a woman who will look beyond his material wealth and see into his heart. When he's all but given up on the possibility that such a woman exists, he runs into the lovely Lacy Williams. The two of them must strive to discover if the bonds of love are stronger than the bonds of tradition.

The Shimmering Stones of Winter's Light by Constance Walker. As an infant, Gwynneth Morys was left in a basket on the steps of a simple cottage in the South of Wales. Now, the kindly couple who raised her have died; she is an orphan once again, totally alone in the world with only her odd, recurring dreams—dreams of a towering mansion on the moors…a beautiful lady in a pale green gown…a tall man whose dark eyes speak of love. Bereft of funds and family, Gwynneth has no choice but to accept the only offer of work to come her way—a position as a companion to an elderly woman in the North of Wales. And as Gwynneth approaches the many-turreted manor house rising out of the mist, close by the fog-enshrouded moors and still closer to the roiling sea, she knows that this is the place she has dreamed of all her life. But not even in her dreams was Gwynneth aware of the tragic death of Lady Jane's only daughter, or the dark desire for vengeance that still burns in the old woman's heart. Nor does she guess that an enemy—her enemy—lurks among the shadowy towers, waiting for her to climb a certain flight of stairs to the one turret from which there could be no escape…and no one to hear her plea for mercy.
