Brenna Aubrey: Geeky AND hot? Can gamers be romance heroes?
Brenna Aubrey, author of For the Win, volume four in her Gaming the System series, joins us to explore why exactly geeks, and gamers in particular, make better lovers.
Brenna: From billionaires to MMA fighters to rock stars, the romance genre has seen it all when it comes to its variety of interesting heroes. But with the rising popularity of nerd culture in movies, TV shows and on the Internet, a new, fresh and maybe unlikely romance hero has emerged: the geek, the nerd, the gamer.
Geek is now chic with shows like The Big Bang Theory and comic-based movies like The Avengers attracting hundreds of thousands to their fan bases. From Captain America to Thor to Loki, we know that comic book heroes are popular — and sexy. And as thousands flock to geeky conventions across the country — the ultimate destination being San Diego Comic-Con — there's no denying that geek culture has moved out of the shadows and into the limelight.
But imagine a geeky romance hero. It's not too hard if you try. Tony Stark, playboy billionaire, is actually just a brilliant geek at heart — one who has successfully designed and constructed a suit of armor to wear for all occasions. Far from the stereotypical nerd, Iron Man is the ultimate swoon-worthy antihero and object of lust for many women.
So what about gamers? With the skills needed to succeed at video games, it's a sure bet that gamers rank high on the scale of hot lover material.
Maybe you've never thought about a gamer as a romance hero. But considering the requirements for succeeding in the video environment and in the bedroom, it's not so far-fetched.
• Gamers are dexterous — from sliding fingers over the keyboard or handling intricate game controllers, men who love gaming have acquired the skills necessary to have the "magic hands" to enhance quality time with a girlfriend.
• Gamers are good at multitasking — being able to pay attention to simultaneous events in the game, switching focus from one trouble spot to another, there's no reason not to believe that a gamer lover can switch from a sexy oil massage with strong, nimble fingers to a little special attention to your trouble spots to landing kisses in all the right places.
• Gamers are imaginative. Through their video gaming experience, gamers must use their skills to problem solve and be creative to achieve their power-ups and get their game to the next level. Those skills can transfer easily from the game room to the bedroom.
• Gamers have an amazing capacity for attention to detail. With gaming, experience, concentration and patience develops from endless hours solving problems in a game. Likewise, in the bedroom, no stone will be left unturned.
• Gamers are well versed in toys, technology and the use of joysticks. Enough said.
• Gamers are goal-oriented. When given the goal and how to achieve it, a gamer won't stop until they've "unlocked" certain very important "achievements" to everybody's satisfaction.
• When gamers know how to score, they go for it without hesitation.
There's no arguing with it, ladies. Geek is here. Geek is chic. And geek is the new sexy.
About For the Win (courtesy of Silver Griffon Associates):
(Part of the Gaming the System series, but can be read as a stand-alone book. No knowledge of the events from the previous three books is required to enjoy this one.)
Millionaire bad boy Jordan Fawkes has problems. Big problems. That molten-hot intern he hooked up with at Comic-Con is now his assistant. No one can know they're the stars of the cosplay sex tape that broke the Internet.
Business school hopeful April Weiss has drama. Big drama. Working under the CFO of Draco Multimedia should be the opportunity of a lifetime for her, but Jordan Fawkes is the boss from Hell—a sexier-than-sin boss from Hell who holds all the cards for her future career.
And then there's the small problem of a certain video…
