Tessa Bailey: Ohhh, that TV show would make a great book

Tessa Bailey, author of the new Up in Smoke, book two in her Crossing the Line series, asks readers to weigh in on what TV shows or movies would make good books — and gets suggestions for the authors to write them.

Tessa: An entertaining pastime for readers is to imagine their favorite book on the big screen. Who would play the lead? What scenes would be vital in bringing the story you love so much to life? But I think we can mostly agree, the book is always better. At least, a very high percentage of the time. So maybe the game we should really be playing is this: which movies/television shows would be awesome as books? AND who would be a great pick to write them? I asked a group of romance readers on Facebook this very question and was blown away by the imaginative answers.

Here are a few of my favorites:

The Blacklist (NBC): An FBI profiler has a complicated and mysterious relationship with a charismatic criminal, played by James Spader. This a sexy show with an intricate plot and complex bad guys, so it's only natural the top pick to write this book would be none other than Maya Banks.

Mad Men (A&E): Madison Avenue advertising executives, led by Don Draper, who I consider to be one of television's most subtle antiheroes. The show is peppered with wit and tongue-in-cheek humor, so I thought it so appropriate when Victoria Dahl was suggested twice to write a Mad Men book. Yes, please!

9½ Weeks: Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger have a steamy, short-lived relationship based almost entirely on sex. I accidentally watched this when I was 11 (someone left out the VHS), and I was super confused, but naturally intrigued! Top pick: Sylvia Day. Yeah, where do I click?

Banshee (Cinemax): If you follow me on Twitter or FB, you know I've developed a slight obsession with this show about a thief who, through a twist of fate, ends up sheriff of a small, Pennsylvania town. Oh, by the way, he just got out of prison after 15 years and his old flame just happens to live in town. I would like to be selfish and pick myself to write a hot, gritty series about ex-cons, but I have it on good authority that Sophie Jordan is already writing one — and there's no one better!

Jupiter Ascending: Jupiter (Mila Kunis) is next in line for a cosmic-balancing inheritance and Caine (Channing Tatum) is sent to Earth to protect and bring her home. Top pick: Nalini Singh. Because, obviously. : )

Charmed (in syndication on TNT): A group of witchy sisters fulfill an ancient prophecy while hanging out with seriously hot dudes, set in San Francisco. There were a few suggestions for this one! I didn't realize this show held such a place in everyone's heart, but maybe I need to Netflix it. Top picks: Rebecca Zanetti and Jeaniene Frost.

Other fun suggestions included: Sense8 to be written by Stephen King, Two Broke Girls to be written by Tara Sivec, Vikings to be written by Kristen Ashley and The Matrix to be written by J.R. Ward!

About Up in Smoke (courtesy of Entangled Select):

Never start a fire you can't control…

Connor Bannon is supposed to be dead. Dishonorably discharged from the Navy SEALs, he's spent the last two years working as a street enforcer in Brooklyn for his cousin's crime ring. Through a twist of fate, he's now in Chicago, working undercover to bust criminals. But when a cute little arsonist joins the team—all combat boots, tiny jean shorts, and hot-pink hair—Connor's notorious iron control slips.

Erin "she's getting away" O'Dea knows two things. She hates authority. And… Nope, that's it. When she's forced to operate on the "right" side of the law, her fear of being confined and controlled blazes to the surface. The last thing she expects is a control freak like Connor to soothe her when she needs it most. Worse, something behind the sexy ex-soldier's eyes ignites a dangerous inferno of desire. One that invites Erin to play with fire. And one that could get them both killed…
