RWA day two: Jessie Potts checks in from the NYC conference
Day two of the Romance Writers of America conference in New York City started off with amazing workshops, and one of my favorites was "Susan and Jayne's Excellent Adventure," in which Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Jayne Ann Krentz humorously (really humorously) gave advice to new and published authors.
Their advice was amazing and is something everyone should hear!
• As a writer you need to discover your own process.
• Show no fear.
• And my favorite: If you critique others, do no harm.
I also got to see the musical Wicked (it blew my mind!) and started thinking … romance books would make awesome — by which I mean hilarious — Broadway musicals, so I asked some of the authors: Which romance book would you love to see turned into a Broadway musical?
Susan Elizabeth Phillips, author of Heroes Are My Weakness
Match Me if You Can, because a bunch of German schoolkids made it a musical and it got picked up for Bollywood!
Nalini Singh, author of Shards of Hope
Sonali Dev's Bollywood Affair. It's romantic, dramatic and beautifully emotional.
Jeaniene Frost, author of Bound by Flames
Losing It by Cora Carmack. I'd love to see an actress yell, "Stop. Cat. Stop."
Amy Lane, author of The Deep of the Sound
Emma Bull's The War of the Oaks: West Side Story meets Supernatural meets a rock 'n' roll band!
Damon Suede, author of Bad Idea
Sonali Dev's Bollywood Affair. She has a sense of big moments, it has musicality built into it!
Kimberly Lang, author of Something to Prove
Julia's Quinn's Bridgerton Family. Hijinks will ensue, and I can see them breaking into song and dance.
Sophie Jordan, co-author of Off-Base with Tessa Bailey
Nobody's Baby But Mine by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. It would be hilarious to see the heroine singing "He's so dumb …" and would make a crazy pants musical.
Andrew Grey, author of A Spirit Without Borders
Rhys Ford's Dirty Kiss. Could you imagine the songs of blood and death and romance?
