Grab the green on National Avocado Day
In this week’s library column, I’ve decided to celebrate National Avocado Day which is on July 31st. Avocados are common in grocery stores today, but their popularity saw a sharp increase at the start of the 2000s. Between 2000 and 2015 the United States’ consumption of avocados quadrupled; in 2015 alone approximately 4.25 billion avocados were sold.
And why shouldn’t we love avocados? They’re what is termed a “super food”; containing Vitamins C, E, and K, they also help fight Alzheimer’ because of the Omega 3 fatty acids they contain, and target insulin resistance. They are also amazing for your skin, the oleic acid they contain helping to moisturize, support regeneration of damaged skin cells, and reducing redness and irritation.
Did you know that you can even use avocados as a butter substitute in baking? Avocados are a tasty and easy way to help make recipes vegan friendly, or just healthier for you and your friends and family. Plus: guacamole is always a positive thing in my opinion. As always, if I’ve inspired you to celebrate this unofficial holiday, you can check out our catalog for books on making your own lotions and more with recipes that include avocados, find a multitude of cookbooks with avocado offerings, or A to Z World Foods database where you can get recipes from around the world!
