IHOP ultrasound pic of pregnant belly full-o-pancakes: Funny or offensive?
The social media post was meant to be funny.
But not everyone thought so.
IHOP's tweet over the weekend wishing moms a Happy Mother's Day landed it in some controversy. The pancake house known for its Rooty Tooty Fresh 'N Fruity tried to get clever and referenced both moms and its signature food item with an ultrasound photo featuring a giant stack of pancakes inside a uterus.
IHOP captioned the post, "If you have pancakes in your tum tum, does that make you a pancake mum mum? Happy Mother’s Day to ALL the moms out there!"
The chain appears to be referencing a "food baby," or possibly that oft-repeated adage that there's a baby in your tummy.
So, NOT funny
We're going to have to assume that the people who giggled at the chain's attempt at humor simply didn't respond to the tweet. Because by far, those who did were not happy with it. IHOP had not yet replied Monday afternoon seeking a reaction.
Many just asked for the tweet to be deleted.
"Gonna be real with you IHOP, this is a really bizarre tweet," wrote @ParkerMolloy.
She followed with an ultrasound picture of her own.
Others asked if the poster knew where babies came from.
"This is pancakes in a uterus," user Heather clarified the fail to IHOP and user Jared followed with a video.
"You -- you do know babies don't grow in stomachs right?" asked one user.
"IHOP needs a science lesson," said @juliamordaunt.
More users wanted to know if IHOP needed someone else to manage its Twitter account.
"I'd be happy to help with your social media campaigns," wrote @jeanmobilia. "If not me, get someone STAT."
"I'm looking to run a brand's social media," said @KylePlantEmoji. "In case you need someone."
"Hey @IHOP if you guys need a new social media person I'm available," posted @FeedThePett. "My only qualification is that I promise I won't post something like this."
What's all the fuss about?
Only a scant few were confused at what all the hub-bub was about.
"These days people need to chill," wrote @IrizarryMb. "Get a sense of humor. I found it funny & cute."
Another poster didn't say it was funny, but she failed to see how it was offensive, even after dozens of people responded to the post.
