Where 'The Shining' left off in 1977 ...
Where Stephen King left the story at the end of The Shining:
Jack Torrance, the troubled former teacher turned hotel caretaker, has been driven crazy by ghosts and visions.
He attacks his wife, Wendy, and hotel chef Dick Hallorann. Later, Torrance's young, telepathic son, Danny, warns his father that the basement boiler is about to explode. Torrance tries to repair it, but he's too late. The explosion kills him, injuries Wendy and Hallorann, and destroys the hotel. Hallorann leads Danny and his mom to safety.
In the epilogue, set the following summer, Hallorann takes Danny fishing and tries to comfort him. "The world don't love you, but your momma does and so do I," he says. "Pull your act together and just go on."
