'Wordbirds': Clever book puts on a Tweet show
In an age of e-mail, Twitter and cool hipsters, Liesl Schillinger, a book critic and translator, likes to coin new words. What she began on Tumblr is now a book, Wordbirds: An Irreverent Lexicon for the 21st Century, illustrated by Elizabeth Zechel's colorful and expressive birds. Here's a sample of Schillinger's neologisms:
Actorvist:"A star who uses celebrity as a soapbox for political punditry – for good or ill."
Apocapic: "Any of the hundreds of bleak films portraying cataclysmic events, which draw fervent audiences of popcorn-crunching pessimists and environmentalists who believe the end of the world is nigh."
Countercoolture:"The unhurried, cooler-than-thou hipster clerks who work at juice bars, bookstores, bubble tea parlors and vintage boutiques. Also the mood they collectively project."
Hollowgram: "An e-mail to which you forgot to attach a file before hitting Send."
Tweet show: "Salacious nude or suggestive photos sent out on the Internet via Twitter."
