1. One Kick by Chelsea Cain (Simon & Schuster, fiction, on sale Aug. 19)
What it's about: First in a new series about heroine Kick Lannigan, who survived being abducted as a child and is now entangled in a missing-child case.
The buzz: NBC has a show based on the series in development, with Sara Colleton (Dexter) executive producing.
2. The Way Forward: Renewing the American Idea by Paul Ryan (Twelve, non-fiction, on sale Aug. 19)
What it's about: The congressman and former vice presidential candidate lays out his conservative vision for the country.
The buzz: With Ryan headed on a book tour, political types are wondering if this is a warm-up to a presidential run in 2016.
3. Adultery by Paulo Coelho (Knopf, fiction, on sale Aug. 19)
What it's about: A 31-year-old married journalist seems to enjoy a perfect life until she meets an old boyfriend turned politician.
The buzz: Coelho (The Alchemist), who's Brazilian, has sold 150 million books worldwide.
4. International Night by Mark Kurlansky and Talia Kurlansky (Bloomsbury, non-fiction, on sale Aug. 19)
What it's about: A father and his ninth-grade daughter team up on Friday nights for meals from around the world; with more than 250 recipes.
The buzz: Kurlansky is known for his books about food, including Cod and Salt.
5. We Are Not Ourselves by Matthew Thomas (Simon & Schuster, fiction, on sale Aug. 19)
What it's about: The story of a post-war marriage between the ambitious daughter of Irish immigrants and a scientist with less invested in the American Dream.
The buzz: A "powerful and significant debut … unforgettable," says Publishers Weekly.
