'13 Hours,' the movie, drives book sales

Here’s a look at what’s new on Paste BN’s Best-Selling Books list…

'Hours' time: A year ago, American Sniper topped Paste BN’s best seller list, and the movie adaptation was tearing up the box office, too. This January, another military movie set in the volatile Middle East — 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi —  is in theaters, and the book on which it’s based is moving up the list.

With a new movie tie-in edition, 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened In Benghazi by Mitchell Zuckoff with the Annex Security Team (Twelve) will be No. 8, up from No. 17 last week. (The full list will publish on Thursday.)

The book was an instant best seller when it was first published, landing at No. 7 on Sept. 18, 2014.  Thanks to publicity surrounding the movie, which stars John Krasinski as a former Navy SEAL turned covert security operative, it returned to the top 50 on Jan. 14, 2016 at No. 28. The authors also have been making media rounds, including Fox News, which has been critical of Hillary Clinton’s handling of the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, while she was Secretary of State.

It seems unlikely 13 Hours can match the mega box-office success of American Sniper (13 Hours made $16 million its opening weekend of Jan. 15), so a climb to No. 1 for the book would be surprising.

13 Hours is not the only movie tie-in selling this week: The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey (No. 5), The Martian by Andy Weir (No. 13),The Big Short by Michael Lewis (No. 43) and Room by Emma Donoghue (No. 47) are also in the top 50.
