'Me Before You' is No. 1 for fourth straight week

Here’s a look at what’s new on Paste BN’s Best-Selling Books list…

More of 'Me': Movies often boost book sales, but the film adaptation of the romantic tearjerker Me Before You has sent Jojo Moyes’ 2012 novel on quite a run.

Me Before You is No. 1 on Paste BN’s list for the fourth straight week. (The full list will publish on Thursday.) That’s the longest streak at No. 1 by any book this year. Only one other title has managed even two straight weeks in the top spot in 2016: the thriller Fool Me Once by Harlan Coben (weeks of March 31 and April 7).

The movie adaptation of Me Before You, released June 3, drew mostly lukewarm reviews (and some outright pans) from critics, but earned $18.7 million opening weekend to come in third at the box office. (The film scored an "A" with audiences on CinemaScore.)

Moyes’ novel, about a paralyzed, wealthy young man (Sam Claflin in the movie) and his caretaker (played by Emilia Clarke), began its climb to the top after the movie trailer was released earlier this year, jumping to No. 3 on Feb. 11 (up from No. 141 the previous week). It has stayed in the top 10 since. Before the trailer’s release, the book’s previous peak was No. 56 on July 31, 2014. It’s spent 117 weeks on the list.

The film also has helped spur sales of Moyes’ 2015 sequel, After You, which is No. 9 this week. (A paperback edition will be published on July 19.)

Moyes, who wrote the screenplay for Me Before You, has a new book coming on Oct. 18: Paris for One and Other Stories. Read an excerpt.
