Books: New and noteworthy
Paste BN’s Jocelyn McClurg scopes out the hottest books on sale each week.
1. Bush by Jean Edward Smith (Simon & Schuster, non-fiction, on sale July 5)
What it’s about: A “hard-hitting” and “superb” examination of George W. Bush’s presidency, says Publishers Weekly.
The buzz: July 5 is a big day for books on political dynasties: Bobby Kennedy: The Making of a Liberal Icon by Larry Dye and Kick: The True Story of JFK’s Sister and the Heir to Chatsworth by Paula Byrne also hit stores.
2. Daisy-Head Mayzie by Dr. Seuss (Random House, fiction, on sale July 5)
What it’s about: A revised edition featuring original artwork by Dr. Seuss for the first time, and his original text about a girl who sprouts a daisy from her head.
The buzz: The spruced-up Mayzie was overseen by Cathy Goldsmith, who worked on last year’s Seuss title What Pet Should I Get?, which hit No. 2 on Paste BN’s Best-Selling Books list.
3. Zika: The Emerging Epidemic by Donald McNeil Jr. (Norton, non-fiction, on sale July 5)
What it’s about: Comprehensive look at what we know about the Zika virus, which has caused babies to be born in Brazil and elsewhere with microcephaly.
The buzz: McNeil covers the Zika story for The New York Times, where he is a science reporter.
4. Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann (Grove, fiction, on sale July 4)
What it’s about: A 50th anniversary edition of the campy ’60s classic about three women friends and the allure of “dolls” — or pills.
The buzz: Arrives the same day as a 40th anniversary edition of Ron Kovic’s Vietnam memoir, Born on the Fourth of July, with a new foreword by none other than Bruce Springsteen.
5. Jonathan Unleashed by Meg Rosoff (Viking, fiction, on sale July 5)
What it’s about: Romantic comedy about a young man in Manhattan trying to get his act together — and the two canines plotting to take over his life.
The buzz: “Readers of this charmer are in for a real treat,” says Kirkus Reviews.
