A musical salute to Tim Hauser of Manhattan Transfer

Music fans around the world were saddened by Thursday's death of Tim Hauser, the founder of vocal group The Manhattan Transfer.

Their seamless fusion of pop and jazz made them a popular act from the 1970s on, and they won eight Grammys between 1980 and 1991.

Let's look back at three of their most memorable songs.

'The Boy From New York City'

This number from 1981, originally a Leiber-Stoller  hit for the Ad Libs in 1965, was The Manhattan Transfer's biggest chart success, peaking at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also won the 1981 Grammy for best pop vocal performance by a duo or group with vocal.

'Birdland'

Manhattan Transfer made Weather Report's 1977 jazz standard uniquely their own. It, too, was a Grammy winner.

'On the Boulevard'

This was the lead-off song from their landmark 1981 album Mecca for Moderns. (Bonus -- check out bass whiz Marcus Miller's work on this live version of the song.)
