Watch: Jason Robards as Ben Bradlee in 'All the President's Men'
Former Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee, who died Tuesday at the age of 93, was a larger-than-life figure in American journalism.
So when All the President's Men, based on the book by Watergate reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, hit movie screens in 1976, it was only fitting that Jason Robards would turn in a larger-than-life performance as Bradlee. He was unforgettable as an editor who, despite initial skepticism about what he calls a "dangerous" story, never wavers in his support for the journalists pursuing it. Robards won an Oscar for his work.
Here are a couple of memorable scenes from All the President's Men that put the spotlight on Robards as Bradlee (language warning in each clip):
"Run that baby."
Bradlee (Robards) gives Woodward (Robert Redford) and Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) the OK to publish an early Watergate story about Attorney General John Mitchell.
"OK, we go with it."
Bradlee gives Woodward and Bernstein the go-ahead to run a story confirming that White House Chief of Staff H.R. Haldeman is involved in Watergate.
"Nothing's riding on this except the First Amendment of the constitution, freedom of the press and maybe the future of the country."
Fearing for their lives, Woodward and Bernstein visit Bradlee at his home to ask whether they should keep pursuing the Watergate story.
