'Shrek' new favorite for high school musicals
What's more romantic than a "tale as old as time"? A green ogre with flatulence issues, apparently.
That would seem to be the takeaway from a new survey of high school musicals in Dramatics, a magazine published by the Educational Theatre Association, in which Shrek The Musical -- introduced on Broadway in 2008, with a cast featuring Brian d'Arcy James, Daniel Breaker and Sutton Foster, pictured above -- unseats Beauty and the Beast as the most popular title.
Don't cry for Belle and her beloved: Beauty had a solid run, with six consecutive years at No. 1. And the Disney fave has only slipped to No. 2.
Also in the top 10: Godspell, Hairspray and Thoroughly Modern Millie tied for No. 3; Into the Woods and Little Shop of Horrors, sharing the No. 6 spot; and, in a four-way tie for No. 8, with Grease, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, The Wizard of Oz and You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown.
Which one would you want to see your son, daughter, sibling, cousin or best friend in?
