The 5 most emotional moments from the 'Doctor Who' season finale
Spoiler alert! The following contains details from Saturday's season finale of Doctor Who.
Well that was something.
Season 8 ofDoctor Who wrapped up Saturday night with "Death in Heaven," and the show delivered an emotional hour of television to say the least. Between the deaths, Danny the cyberman and the Doctor's hug, we could barely keep it together. We've outlined the five most emotional from the episode, because we have to get these feelings out somehow.
5. When Osgood died
Why oh why did you have to kill the bow tie and scarf-wearing Doctor fan? UNIT's asthmatic scientist had only appeared previously in the 50th Anniversary special, but as a clear stand-in for a fan of the show, she was instantly loved. When the Master killed her, the hearts of a million fans were broken.
4. When the Doctor saluted Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart
Here's one for fans of classic Who. It turns out one of the Cybermen who rose from the grave was old Alistair, who was there to save his daughter and kill the Master in just the nick of time, something he tried to do back in the 70s. And when the Doctor, especially this unsentimental regeneration, gave him the salute he always wanted, there wasn't a dry eye to be found.
3. When Danny sent the boy back in his place
Perhaps one of the darkest things to ever happen on this show was the reveal that Danny had accidentally killed a child in his time in the army. As soon as we learned that "only one person" could come back from the dead, we knew who was coming. Clara's heart might be broken, but it was a fitting end to Danny's storyline. We'll miss you, Danny Pink, even if your name was ridiculous.
2. When the Doctor didn't find Gallifrey
We pretty much knew the Master had to be lying when she suddenly came up with some coordinates for the Doctor's lost world, but it was still pretty devastating to see the Doctor break down when he opened the TARDIS doors only to see empty space. And it was even more devastating when the Doctor, this colder, more stoic incarnation of our favorite Time Lord, completely broke down. Don't worry Doctor, Gallifrey is out there, somewhere.
1. When Clara and the Doctor hugged
In a season that's been all about when it's good to tell the truth and when you need to lie, it was appropriate that we ended on the Doctor and Clara each telling a big lie to make the other feel better. And we basically had all the feels (All. The. Feels.) when the two embraced, each completely broken but not willing to tell the other. Maybe it's a good thing that hugs hide people's faces, since Clara and the Doctor's lies probably would have unraveled.
But don't worry, Whovians. Even though the episode may have been a bit of a downer (OK, a lot of a downer) there is still hope. I mean, let's not forget that Nick Frost (of Shaun of the Dead fame) showed up in the TARDIS as freaking Santa Claus. And the countdown to the Christmas special begins ... now.
