Yes, the guy Steve Carell put on a prosthetic nose to play in 'Foxcatcher' is seriously crazy

Spoiler Alert! If you're unfamiliar with John du Pont and you don't want to know what happens in the film Foxcatcher, stop reading now!

Thanks for sticking around. Here's what those other guys missed:

Steve Carell is best known for being hilarious, specifically in 40-Year-Old Virgin and The Office, but he's getting rave reviews for his recent dramatic turn. The actor stars as John du Pont in Foxcatcher, the Oscar-ready film out this weekend.

With the help of makeup and a prosthetic nose, Carell transforms into the real man who, in 1996, was found guilty of murdering gold-medal wrestler Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo in the movie; Channing Tatum plays his brother). Du Pont died in prison in 2010.

If you're like us, the Foxcatcher film got you extra-curious about this extremely creepy John du Pont character. So, we combed through Paste BN reporter Maria Puente's archived coverage of the mentally ill murderer, and learned this (Warning: We're talking about murder here, so these facts are unsettling):

  • John du Pont had a fortune estimated at $250 million

  • He was part of the du Pont chemical empire that was worth an estimated $10 billion in 1996

  • He ran Team Foxcatcher, an enterprise anchored at a training facility outside of Philadelphia

  • The 800-acre Foxcatcher Estate is where he killed Schultz, who lived there

  • Schultz was working on his car when du Pont shot him to death

  • After the murder, du Pont fled the scene and stayed in his mansion with his large gun collection for two days, while SWAT negotiators tried to coax him out

  • He was captured when he stepped out to fix the heat that police had turned off

  • The defense told the jury that du Pont thought people were hiding in the walls of his house, that bales of hay in the barn contained messages from Mars and that the Russian army was about to invade his estate

  • He used cocaine regularly

  • Du Pont was found guilty, but mentally ill, and sentenced to 13-to-30 years in prison, where he died in 2010 at age 72

  • At his arraignment, when asked, "Who are you?" He replied, "the Dalai Lama"

  • His illness was identified in the trial as paranoid schizophrenia

Here are real things that people have said about du Pont in Paste BN reports:

  • "He's crazy as a loon." - John Christaldi, a wrestler who trained at Foxcatcher

  • "He put a gun to my head through the (open passenger) window and told us to get out... We all thought he was extremely crazy. He thought my friend was digging tunnels to the mansion to spy on him." - Eric Grassi, who visited a friend at du Pont's estate

  • He thinks he's the president of the Soviet Union, the last of the Russian czars, heir to the Third Reich and Jesus Christ - Defense psychiatrists

If you're not freaked out enough yet, watch Carell as du Pont:
