The 'Peter Pan Live' actor we're really excited to see (it's not Allison Williams)
Last year, NBC's live production of The Sound of Music had solid ratings, but tepid reviews. The supporting cast of Tony winners Audra McDonald, Laura Benanti and Christian Borle basically carried the show, since Carrie Underwood's acting ability can be described in six words: "Line reading with a blank expression."
Fortunately for NBC, and for us, Borle survived the show and is back for tonight's production, Peter Pan Live!, which stars Allison Williams (as Peter Pan) and Christopher Walken (as Hook). Here's why that just makes so much sense:
He did a live NBC musical before
Like we just said, Borle was in The Sound of Music. He played Max.
He's done a Peter Pan show before, and he won a Tony for it
He played the pre-Captain Hook character Black Stache (which happens to be the name of the band we just started) in Pan prequel Peter and the Starcatcher. He won the 2012 best-actor Tony for it. Because he's just that cool.
He worked with his Pan co-star previously, on yet another Pan-inspired project
In Peter Pan Live!, he's the Mr. Darling to theater actress Kelli O'Hara's Mrs. Darling. In fact, he and O'Hara worked together before, a while back. Borle told Paste BN's Elysa Gardner that he and O'Hara did a one-week reading of musical Finding Neverland.
NBC clearly loves him
The network put this guy in another musical after canceling his "how to make a musical" show, Smash. He must be good.
He's playing two roles
Borle is playing Mr. Darling AND Smee. Usually it's the actor who plays Hook who also plays Mr. Darling, but Borle said in an NBC clip that he took on two parts, because "we want to save our sweet Mr. Walken for the entrance of Captain Hook."
