Benedict Cumberbatch: 'Doctor Strange' isn't a risk, because Marvel can do anything

After Guardians of the Galaxy -- an obscure assortment of comic book characters including a raccoon and a sentient tree -- became 2014's biggest box office hit, it seems that Marvel can turn pretty much anything into a blockbuster. Which is maybe why Benedict Cumberbatch, who recently signed on to play slightly obscure Marvel hero Doctor Strange, isn't too worried about his Marvel movie.

When The Wall Street Journal asked Cumberbatch if playing the Sorcerer Supreme is a "risk," he had this very succinct answer for them:
"I don’t think it’s a risk because of Marvel."
Well, that'll do it.

He also went on to say:
"Marvel is a stable of bringing out ordinary comic characters and turning them into screen-like gods. It’s very different, it’s an Astral Plane. There’s a huge new element to this Marvel universe that’s going to be employed in building this story and this character. But you know, I’m really excited about it, about working with (Director Scott Derrickson) whose imagination is endless, and all the boys and girls at Marvel who know what they’re doing."
