What's Tina Fey like as a boss?
At the Elle Women in Television celebratory dinner in Hollywood on Tuesday night, held at the Sunset Tower Hotel, powerhouse talents from Shonda Rhimes to Elle cover girl Lena Dunham schmoozed over beet and goat cheese salads and truffled steak frites. When we ran into former Office employee Ellie Kemper, we had a lot of questions about her upcoming Tina Fey-backed Netflix series, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, debuting on the streaming service March 6.
Kemper plays a woman who, after 15 years in a doomsday cult, decides to reclaim her life and start over in New York City. "I'm not just saying this because it's my project, but it's really good!" Kemper told us (and she would know, she's seen nine of the 13 episodes.)
So first up: What's Tina Fey like as a boss?
"She's fantastic," says Kemper. "You all read about it in Bossypants. She's is so down to earth and focused and kind."
Does Tina write on the fly?
"She was there every day on the set. She and Robert (Carlock, also a 30 Rock vet) are writing the show, so they were in the writers' room. One of them would always be on set to make sure that things were running smoothly."
What goes on in that writers' room?
We pressed for snack intel, at least, but Kemper only got a glimpse.
"I only saw the writer's room the last day of shooting. There were windows. We shoot in a warehouse in Brooklyn. And when I got to the third floor where the writers' room was I went, 'There's windows?!' That was the takeaway."
What was Ellie's favorite Globes moment on Sunday while her boss hosted with Amy Poehler?
"Loved the Cosby joke. Loved the whole North Korea stuff. Margaret Cho was amazing."
