4 things to know before you watch Lifetime's 'Whitney' biopic tonight
Hate-watching stuff -- especially stuff on Lifetime -- has become a national hobby, so we wanted to give you some pointers as you prepare for your Whitney biopic viewing party tonight.
Now, don't get us wrong, the Angela Bassett-directed TV movie isn't awful ... but it's not great either. What it definitely is not is anywhere near as bad as the hot mess that was the Aaliyah biopic, so we can all be thankful for that.
Still, there are some things to keep in mind as you watch, like...
It's all about Bobby
Bobby, Bobby, Bobby. A few times, we had to check the cover of our screener DVD to make sure the movie wasn't actually called My Prerogative: The Bobby Brown Story. We swear actor Arlen Escarpeta got more screen time than Yaya DaCosta, who played his onscreen wife.
Those sex scenes are raunchy
Arlen and Yaya sure do have lots of chemistry. Like, maybe too much. Although we tried to mentally block the scene where he puts her entire ring finger in his mouth while proposing, it's still there, seared onto our brains forever. Barf.
Deborah Cox kills the soundtrack
Some haters were upset that Whitney's family had no interest in letting Lifetime use her catalog of songs for the movie, but Bassett found a way around that: Canadian R&B singer Deborah Cox. No one can be or ever will be Whitney, but man did Deborah sang those songs. Yes, SANG. (We know our verb tenses, thank you very much.)
It just ... ends
Whitney's 2012 death is not included in the movie and just when we were ready to get into the messy, reality show-era part of her life, the movie just fades to black. We won't say much more, but just don't expect to learn a lot about the late singer's private life. What's in this movie is stuff we pretty much already knew -- even the drug abuse.
