'Serial' news: Incarcerated Adnan Syed granted appeal

The popular podcast Serial detailed the case for and against Adnan Syed, a man convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend as a teenager in 1999. Season 1 of Serial ended on a rather ambiguous note: Host Sarah Koenig could not determine whether the incarcerated Adnan Syed was guilty of killing Hae Min Lee. Koenig said the case for his appeal was alive by a thread.
"Now, I'd say it's more of a ... well-made string, maybe. Like the nylon kind," writes Koenig in a blog post.
The Maryland Court of Special Appeals has agreed to hear arguments about why Adnan should get a new trial. (Adnan argued that his trial attorney made several mistakes, including not talking to potential witness Asia McLain, who said that she would appeal in court if subpoenaed.)

Koenig writes that a panel of judges will hear oral arguments about Adnan's case in its June session. After that, the case could end up in the Court of Appeals.
"So it's bound to grind on for a long while yet," says Koenig.
