How to cocktail through the Oscar-nominated films


For the first time, the venue next to the Oscar theater, the Loews Hollywood Hotel, will offer drinks based on the Oscar-nominated films being scrutinized next door.

Academy members and guests alike can vote with their drinking palate for the best films on Oscar Sunday. And its a concept that has spread to restaurants and hotels across the county.

A look at the top cocktail nominees:

Mendl's Cocktail au Chocolat from The Grand Budapest Hotel

Helix Lounge in Washington D.C.



Inspired by Mendl’s trademark sweet from Grand Budapest Hotel, this cocktail includes Godiva Chocolate liqueur, vodka crème de cacao, and half & half.


  • 5 oz Stoli Vodka

  • 5 oz Crème de Cacao

  • 5 oz Godiva Chocolate liqueur

  • .25 oz half and half


Shake over ice and strain into a chilled martini glass.




Mason’s Milk from Boyhood

**Build in Blender**


  • 1½oz Belvedere

  • ¾oz Cherry Herring

  • ½ Crème de Cacao White

  • 2 Scoops of Vanilla Ice Cream

  • 1 Scoop of Ice

  • Blend

  • Pour into open rim Champagne Glass with dollop of whip cream & chocolate syrup

  • 2 oz Maker’s Mark

  • ¾ Canton Ginger

  • 4-5 Dashes Orange Bitters

  • Ice/Shake

  • Pour/ Martini Glass

  • Garnish with Orange twist





 Flight of Fancy from Birdman

  • ½oz Agave

  • 2 Dashes of Orange Bitters

  • 1 Cherry

  • Muddle

  • 2oz Bullet Rye

  • Shake/Ice

  • Strain/Champagne Glass

  • Top it off with Ruffino Prosecco

  • Garnish with cherry and orange twist

  • 1.5 oz Rum

  • 0.5 oz Simple

  • 0.5 oz Lemon

  • 0.5 oz Aperol

  • Egg White

  • Dry Shake, Shake w/ Ice, Double Strain into Flute, Bitters Garnish


Ideally, this drink will look similar to the (pink) Grand Budapest Hotel in winter.




Whiplash from Whiplash

  • 2 oz butter-washed Rittenhouse Rye

  • 0.5 oz Punt e Mes

  • 0.5 oz Cinnamon Cherry Syrup

  • Stir, strain, strain into Martini, orange twist

A genius rendition of the popular cocktail with everything in it. The Long Island Iced Tea but deconstructed.


  • 5 oz gin

  • 5 oz rum

  • 5 oz tequila

  • 5 oz vodka

  • 5 oz Cointreau

  • 5 oz lemon juice

  • 5 oz lime juice

  • 5 oz simple syrup (you can use honey if you have that instead)

  • 5 oz of coke syrup

  • Layer the coke syrup in the bottom of the glass

  • Shake and double strain and layer over the syrup

  • Garnish with a lemon twist
