Learn 5 fun facts about James Corden's 'Late Late Show' set
James Corden kicks off his tenure at The Late Late Show tonight (CBS, 12:37 a.m. ET/PT) and he kindly offered Paste BN an early-bird tour of his new late-night set. It's got a number of intriguing elements.
It's designed for a 360-degree view, with many guests entering from the rear of the set behind the audience.
“James thrives on unpredictability, mischief and fun. We will be ready when he goes off course and actually starts running into the audience and has a chat with someone,” executive producer Ben Winston says.
The evening's guests will be interviewed together, rather than individually.
"I hope it will promote an atmosphere which is perhaps more organic" for conversation, Corden says. (And we got to sit on the couch before Monday's guests, Oscar winner Tom Hanks and Mila Kunis, did. Aren't we special!)
The group dynamic resulted in an opening night coup, as the host, aided by Hanks, successfully goaded Kunis into revealing she and Ashton Kutcher are married. Take a look:
The host has a British good luck charm on the stage.
The place of the floor where Corden, a native of England, greets the audience is marked by a logo sticker of his favorite soccer team, West Ham United.
"I don't know if this is a good omen or a bad omen, because as it stands, we haven't won in 10 games," Corden says during last week's tour. (Maybe it's a good omen. The team won on Saturday.)
The set backdrop is a 3-D re-creation of Los Angeles landmarks, including the Roosevelt Hotel and the Capitol Records building.
There are even little houses – probably with little multi-millionaires inside – in the backdrop's Hollywood Hills.
There's a bar, too.
"This is real alcohol, I think," Corden says. It sure looks real.
Can guests have a drink? "I'm sure guests can do whatever they want on our show. That's going to be the beauty of it," he says.
Corden hopes the set conveys the message of his new late-night offering. "We just wanted the whole thing to feel very intimate (and) feel like a place where you want to be at 12:30."
