5 questions from the 'Shameless' finale that we need answered ASAP
Spoiler alert! The following contains details from Sunday's season finale of Shameless.
Season five of the hit Showtime drama Shameless came to a close last night, and fans from around the globe seemed to have similar reactions to the crazy episode:
Through five seasons of arrests, drug addictions, bad attitudes and messed-up relationships, we thought that the infamous Gallagher family from the south side of Chicago couldn't surprise us any more than they have in the past. And, like fools, we were wrong.
After an emotional hour-long finale, we need answers, to these five questions, right now.
1. Is Debbie seriously having a baby?
We can probably all agree with Fiona when she says that Debbie is too young to have a baby, yet it may be too late to protect her from getting pregnant. At the very end of the finale, 14-year-old Debbie — who is convinced that she loves her boyfriend Derek and wants to have his child — reads a pregnancy test with a big smile on her face.
Could Debbie REALLY be pregnant?! And if she is pregnant, is it possible that she would actually keep the baby? The Gallagher family can barely keep track of the fully grown humans already living in their household. And, even if they could, the stress of Vee and Kev's three babies plus Mickey's baby is already too much for everyone to handle.
Here's to hoping that Debbie's pregnancy test is a false positive and she continues as a childless teenager for the rest of the series.
2. What in the world is going on with Lip and his professor?
OK — it was weird enough when Lip started to hook-up with his critical theory professor, Helene, a few episodes ago. Now, Lip is telling Ian that he's falling in LOVE with her?!
We know that Lip has had a rough track record with past lovers: There was Sheila's daughter Karen who basically disappeared after she was hit by a car, Mickey's sister Mandy (the psycho who hit Karen with the car), and Lip's "casual" college girlfriend Amanda who he never really liked in the first place. Therefore, we're all ready for Lip to find the girl of his dreams ... but is that girl actually his married professor?
We still can't comprehend why Helene's husband is OK with Lip sleeping with his wife — nevertheless why he wants to watch them have sex — but that's beyond us at this point. At least we can sleep tight until next season knowing that Amanda is (hopefully) out of the picture.
3. Have we seen the end of the Gallavich love?
Arguably, the most heartwarming moment of the finale was when Mickey told Ian, "I love you ... It means we take care of each other ... It means thick and thin. Good times, bad, sickness, health ..." And then, our hearts were immediately broken when Ian responded by breaking up with Mickey. Maybe it was just Ian's bipolar disorder that influenced him to end the Gallavich relationship, but regardless of the reason, it's not all right.
If we've learned anything from the Gallagher family, it's that nobody is decent at holding together a relationship. Yet, the love between Ian Gallagher and Mickey Milkovich has been blossoming since season one and we're way too invested to give it up now. If we've seen the end of Gallavich, what hope do we have for true love in the future?! Don't do this to us, guys!
4. Will Fiona and Gus' marriage last?
Just as we've seen dozens of times before, Fiona has managed to screw up another great relationship in season five — this time with her (barely) husband, Gus. Although we had high hopes for Fiona and Gus' relationship when they first met this season, it's clear that a rushed marriage followed by Fiona's sexual encounter with ex-boyfriend Jimmy/Steve/Jack has all added up to trouble between the newlyweds.
Right when we thought the wounds between Gus and Fiona were healing, Gus called Fiona his "friend" (instead of, you know, his "wife") and told Fiona that she needs to decide what she wants from their relationship. So, naturally, Fiona kissed her boss Sean and told him that she loved him. And, naturally, Sean rejected her.
Despite Gus being the nicest guy Fiona has probably ever met, their relationship is bound to go up in flames. If Fiona can't commit to their marriage, then she owes it to Gus — and all of us — to end things with him in season six.
5. Will Liam ever have his own story line!?
Liam can walk, clean up his dishes and basically take care of himself when nobody is around. Why doesn't his character have a significant plot in the show? Sure, Liam had a few minutes in the spotlight when he accidentally ingested Fiona's cocaine in season four, but that was a whole year ago! As Liam grows, we hope the show acknowledges him as a true Gallagher family member and allows him to get into some more trouble — just like his older brothers and sisters.
Despite the crazy scenarios and even crazier people, season five left us loving the Gallagher family more now than ever before. Bravo, Shameless, and thank you for another incredible season — 2016 can't come quickly enough.
