Why is Mindy Kaling winking to her fans?

Well, this is intriguing.

As news organizations were reporting Wednesday that Fox is passing on a fourth season of The Mindy Project, Mindy Kaling – the creator, writer and star – chimed in, sideways.

While fans were hearing the news reports, Kaling, who has nearly 4 million Twitter followers, tweeted a very innocent-sounding message: "Hey guys, I'm in Montana, is anything happening in LA?"

The accompanying Instagram video pans across a bucolic river-and-woods scene before focusing on a smiling Kaling, who winks at the camera. Take a look.

Kaling certainly doesn't look unhappy. Does she know something fans don't? Like the possibility that Mindy – owned by producing studio Universal Television, not Fox – could get a fourth season somewhere else? Some news organizations, including The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline Hollywood and Entertainment Weekly, are reporting that discussions are taking place about the possibility of new episodes moving to streaming service Hulu, which already features earlier episodes via its Hulu Plus service.

It's been done before. Community made the jump from NBC to Yahoo, premiering its latest season in March.

With broadcast and many cable networks announcing new fall programs over the next week, which also means news of accompanying cancellations, we'll find out the long- or short-term fate of many shows, including Mindy, pretty soon. Stay tuned.
