Is the 'Supergirl' trailer sexist? The Internet is torn

The Supergirl trailer dropped yesterday and while many of the reactions to it were soaring, for some, it disappointed them faster than a speeding bullet. Why? Because of the eerie similarities between the trailer and a certain Black Widow sketch from SNL.

Watch the sketch in question:

A woman trying to balance life as a superhero with romance and work? Can she have it all? Yes, it sounds like a cliche, and people noticed.

But Supergirl lovers leaped to its defense: Kara is a completely different character from Black Widow, and thus is more suited to this kind of bashful, rom-com type of persona.

She's a girl, and that's all right.

So while seeing Black Widow in a work-vs.-love setting is a mockery of all her struggles and nuances, it isn't necessarily so for Supergirl, a girl just struggling to get on her feet in the real world and as a superhero. Honestly, we see more similarities to everyman characters like the Flash or Spider-Man than a 3-minute sketch parodying the conventions of the rom-com genre.

And what's wrong with a show being catered to girls? Lord knows we have way too many shows catered to the boys who love "dark," "gritty" and "no Black Widow action figures."
