Did Bey and Jay secretly donate thousands to #BlackLivesMatter?
Jay Z and Beyonce have taken heat (from us included) for their lack of participation in the #BlackLivesMatter protests.
Aside from a few Instagram posts and some t-shirts , the couple has largely stayed silent about the movement.
But according to social justice activist Dream Hampton, the Carters' actions may speak louder than their words.
Hampton, who worked with with Jay Z on his autobiography Decoded, shared in a series of tweets last night that Jay and Bey secretly wired money to bail out protesters arrested in Ferguson and Baltimore.
She deleted her first string of tweets afterwards, citing typos, but here's the full text:
"I'm going to tweet this and I don't care if Jay gets mad.
When we needed money for bail for Baltimore protesters, I asked hit Jay up, as I had for Ferguson, wired tens of thousands in mins.
When BLM [Black Lives Matter] needed infrastructure money for the many chapters that we're growing like beautiful dandelions, the Carters wrote a huge check.
...and more stuff, too much to list actually, that they always insist folk keep quiet."
After Hampton deleted her first tweets, she posted a few more thoughts.
Wow -- so not only are the Carters involved with #BlackLivesMatter, they may be actively support the movement's mandate for social change.
Should Jay and Bey have made their financial involvement public, perhaps to encourage other famous friends to join? Or is it admirable that the couple kept their donations private, instead of turning it into a publicity stunt?
Either way, if Hampton's version of events is true, the Carters are setting an example for other activist celebs to speak with their wallets, not just with their words.
