Not OK: Snoop Dogg called Caitlyn Jenner a 'science project'
Of all the ignorant celebrity reactions to Caitlyn Jenner's Vanity Fair cover this week (Drake Bell and Timbaland, we're looking at you) Snoop Dogg's may be the worst.
Snoop posted a transphobic meme to his Instagram, which calls Caitlyn a "science project." Ignoring Jenner's "Call Me Caitlyn" message, the picture also refers to her Bruce, an offensive gesture called deadnaming.
We don't have to explain why this comment isn't okay — the ignorance speaks for itself here.
Another shame about this photo: it drags Akon and his inspiring new initiative into this mess. The singer's new Akon Lighting Africa project is an ambitious new initiative aimed at providing millions of Africans with electricity.
If Snoop Dogg wanted to shine a spotlight on Akon's humanitarian work, he could have started by just posting about the project — his 5+ million Instagram followers certainly would've paid attention. And then, if he felt so strongly about its importance, he could have made headlines by donating money to Akon Lighting Africa instead.
It's possible to celebrate Caitlyn Jenner's cover AND draw attention to under-appreciated humanitarian projects; the two aren't mutually exclusive. But instead, Snoop Dogg dragged Akon's project into the headlines for all the wrong reasons, and outed himself as a bigot in the process.
