Did 'Orphan Black' just kill off a major character?
Warning! Contains spoilers for Saturday's Season 3 finale of Orphan Black.
Game of Thrones' Jon Snow has only been gone a week and we're already mourning another beloved TV character.
As Orphan Black's season finale "History Yet to Be Written" came to a close Saturday night, everything seemed to be looking up for our Leda clone "sestras." Alison won the school-board election, Helena reconnected with hunky tow-truck guy Jesse, and Sarah had yet another joyous reunion with daughter Monkey (err, Kira).
The uncharacteristically hopeful episode also had its share of bloodshed, like when Helena sent Castor clone Rudy to the grave using a screwdriver and duct tape (because she's badass like that). But the character's fate that Orphan fans can't stop talking about is Delphine's, after she was shot in the stomach by an off-screen shooter at the end of the episode, uttering last words: "What will happen to her?" before collapsing in a parking garage.
The shocking scene came just moments after she shared a goodbye kiss with on-and-off-again girlfriend Cosima and made peace with Cosima's new love interest, Shay. Understandably, fans were devastated:
Orphan stars
and
also shared heartbreaking tributes to the character and "Clone Club" fans on Twitter.
But is Delphine really dead? After all, characters like Helena (shot by Sarah in Season 1) and Rachel (stabbed by a pencil in Season 2) have recovered from similarly dire circumstances in finale episodes. And co-creator John Fawcett was wishy-washy about her fate when asked by Variety's Laura Prudom:
I would love to say yes or no, but this is 'Orphan Black' and I don’t want to say one way or the other. … We wanted to leave it in a hanging cliffhanger, so is she dead? Is she alive? I want the audience asking those questions.
Although, co-creator Graeme Manson was a bit blunter when talking to the A.V. Club:
Um… yes. Yes, but "Orphan Black" is a cliffhanger. For all intents and purposes, (Delphine) is dead. But there’s always a crack of hope in an actor’s busy schedule. They can reappear somehow.
And so, the agonizing wait for Season 4 begins.
