The trailer for 'The Revenant' may finally explain Leo DiCaprio's ridiculous beard

Summer is about halfway over, which means the trailer game shifts from the biggest and most explosive superhero trailers to the artsiest and buzziest Oscar fare. We've seen some entries from Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender, and now it's everybody's favorite guy-who-doesn't-have-an-Oscar-but-probably-really-should entering the mix.

That's right the first trailer for Leonardo DiCaprio's The Revenant premiered online Friday, and besides officially throwing his hat into the Academy's ring, it also kind of helps explain why he's looked a little different lately.

The movie itself is set in the 19th century based on the experience of a fur trapper. If that sounds a little weird, don't worry, because Oscar-winning director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu is at the helm, so it will probably be pretty stunning.

And regardless of Leo's Oscar chances, this trailer should definitely win one for best use of breath as a percussion instrument.

The Revenant hits theaters Christmas day.
