As if! 5 homages to 'Clueless' that pale compared to the real thing
Clueless was way timeless, so that's why any attempts to imitate or spoof it can't hold up to the brilliant semi-parody of teen life that Clueless was itself.
But in honor of its 20th anniversary today, we've compiled some of the best and brightest homages/spoofs/Bollywood remakes of the quintessential teen movie of the '90s.
The Golden Girls mini-reunion at the 1996 MTV Movie Awards
The original trio of gal pals parodied Clueless in honor of its wins at the MTV Movie Awards and it was amazing. It was also a mini-reunion for the Golden Girls (minus Bea Arthur) since the show ended in 1992 so that's even better. Classic!
Iggy Azalea's Fancy music video
The homage that (hopefully) introduced Clueless to a whole new generation, Iggy made us like her temporarily with this shot-by-shot re-enactment of the movie in her music video for Clueless. The outfits! The phones! The car scene! It's all so totally perfect.
The Clueless TV show
OK, so this wasn't an homage so much as an official television spin-off, but it didn't feel the same without Alicia Silverstone and her wonderfully expressive facial expressions. Instead, Cher is played by Rachel Blanchard, Tai is played by Heather Gottlieb, and everything is way too bright and pink. Also who is this not-Paul Rudd Josh?? No thank you.
Emma Approved
This webseries is technically a modern adaptation of Emma, the Jane Austen book that Clueless itself is based on, but the story and its modern setting draws inescapable parallels. Emma is probably a little more unlikable than Cher (not so much the ditz with a credit card as a semi-manipulative bosswoman with a credit card) but the romance with her and Alex (the original version of Josh) is pretty cute. This one passes.
Aisha
You can't make a great movie in Hollywood without getting a Bollywood remake of it. Aisha is a 2010 Indian rom-com about a girl, Aisha, who can't stop matchmaking her friends while constantly bickering with her friend/neighbor Arjun (aka Indian Josh). Just think Clueless with elaborate musical numbers.
